Minutes of the ANC1A Regular Meeting

held on September 12, 2012 at Tubman Elementary School, D.C.

 

Chairman Thomas Boisvert began the meeting at 7:05 p.m. Commissioners present for the meeting were: Lisa Kralovic (1A01), Vickey Wright-Smith (1A02), Betty Pair (1A04), Laina Aquiline (1A05), William Brown (1A06), Thomas Boisvert (1A07), Kent Boese (1A08), Bobby Holmes (1A09), Lenwood O. Johnson (1A10) and Dotti Love Wade (1A11). Commissioners absent were Sheldon Scott (1A03). Approximately 49 persons attended the meeting.

 

Community Announcements

 

Several persons spoke under the Community Announcements portion:

Commissioner Aquiline followed up on changes made by DDOT on the traffic lights along 14th Street. She also made announcements on the reopening of the Mt. Pleasant library, the opening of Lime Fresh and Z Burger, and the Tubman School Reading Allstars program.

Commissioner Boese announced a scheduled MPD meeting at the Park View Recreation Center, shared information on the completed phase 1 modernization at the Park View School, and shared information on an upcoming At-Large Council debate to be held at Catholic University.

Commissioner Johnson shared information on the upcoming MPD Field Day at Ft. McNair and an upcoming hearing on the recent PEPCO power outages held by the DC Public Service Commissioner.

Commissioner Wright-Smith updated the community on the condemnation hearing for 1483 Newton Place, which has been extended by 90 days. She also announced the upcoming PSA 409 meeting scheduled for September 19th.

Commissioner Brown informed the community that Columbia Heights Day will be held on October 6th from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Commissioner Love Wade shared information on the Summer Tournament of Games.

Sylvia Robinson announced the up upcoming Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser for the Emergence Community Arts Collective.

Al Zegwue made announcements about the Seniors Program at the Park View Recreation Center, the Centers upcoming open house, and their Boot Camp program.

Michael Beidler shared information about a new residential housing development that is about to begin at Georgia Avenue and Kenyon Street, NW.

Adam Bayer shared information about the Convoy of Hope program scheduled for Columbia Heights on September 22.

Alicia Horton shared information on the upcoming Thrive DC 1st Annual Thrive 365 Bruch Gala to be held at Howard Theatre.

Frank Maduro, Executive Office of the Mayor announced an upcoming DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency Ward-Based community disaster exercise program to be held at Bell High School.

Mack Thomson made a brief announcement about the upcoming Fall Tournament of Games and expressed gratitude for past support.

Shi Faust, Director of Communications for Councilmember Orange announced the upcoming Small Business Summit hosted by Councilmember Orange on September 28th.

 

Committee Reports

 

Commissioner Boese presented and filed a Report on Historical Landmarks, Potential Landmarks, & Sites of Historical or Cultural Importance within ANC 1A. The report will be posted on the ANC 1A Web site and distributed via local listservs.

Commissioner Boese gave an update on the Single Sales Task Force, stating that there was still much for the task force to discuss before it could make a recommendation to the ANC.

Cecilia Jones presented and distributed the ANC 1A September 2012 Public Safety Report .

 

Treasurers Report

 

Commissioner Brown submitted a treasurers report for September, 2012. Commissioner Boisvert moved to approve the report.

 

 

Presentations

 

Deidre Lee, office manager of Bacon Funeral Home, gave a status update on the business construction plans, the status of its condemnation hearing, and answered community questions.

 

Official Business

 

Commissioner Love Wade introduced a Grant application in the amount of $1,400 for Project Giveback. Commissioner Love Wade moved to approve the grant.

 

Commissioner Boese introduced a Grant application in the amount of $1,000 for the United Neighborhood Coalition to print Park View walking trail brochures. Commissioner Boese moved to approve the grant.

 

Commissioner Pair introduced a Letter of Support for the Picnic in the park at 11th & Monroe. Commissioner Pair moved to approve the letter.

 

Commissioner Boisvert introduced a Letter of Support for Maru Montero Dance Company. Commissioner Boisvert moved to approve the letter.

 

Commissioner Brown introduced a Letter of Support for Columbia Heights Coffees Outdoor Seating. Commissioner Brown moved to approve the letter.

 

Commissioner Wright-Smith introduced a request to purchase an Advertisement in the Thrive DC Gala Commemorative Booklet in the amount of $400. Commissioner Wright-Smith moved to approve the request.

 

Commissioner Brown introduced a BZA Application seeking variance relief for 1300 Park Road. The applicant requested relief for required off-street parking and support for relief from the Building Restriction Line (BRL) Limitation. Commissioner Brown moved to approve both requests.

 

Commissioner Kralovic introduced a Letter in Support of BZA Application No. 18442 for variance to convert 1400 Spring Road from a church to an apartment building. Commissioner Kralovic moved to approve the letter of support. 

 

Commissioner Kralovic introduced a Letter in Support of BZA Application No. 18443 for variance to convert 3616 14th Street, NW, from a Retail/Office building to a structure with retail on the first story and apartments on the second and third story. Commissioner Kralovic moved to approve the letter of support. 

 

Commissioner Brown introduced a Letter of Support for the Convoy of Hope. Commissioner Brown moved to approve the letter.
